Wellness Wednesday

Happy hump day friends! I have been so busy this week I’ve slacked a little on this little piece of my life, but my personal goal is to keep improving it as much as I can.

So today’s post is a little gym update, because as many of you may know, I’ve just recently been recovering from surgery. Now that I’m at about 80-90%, I’ve been able to work out again. At first, I wasn’t sure how I’d handle it, since it’s been SO long since I’ve been physically able to work out. Even before my surgery, I went about two years without being physically well enough to do much physical activity.

And, naturally, as with any NON-weight bearing surgery, I gained some weight, which used to be my biggest fear in life. BUT God is really, really freaking awesome, and here I am loving my body regardless!  It’s nowhere near perfect. I have some personal improvements to make, but knowing I’m at a place where I can define boundaries for myself in the gym (& the kitchen), makes this whole process so much easier. The gym is still my happy place, but it’s not my crutch. I still strive to eat healthy, but I listen to my body and fuel it.

If you are struggling with how you feel about yourself and have a negative body image, please be kind to your body. Strive to be strong and happy, don’t strive to be skinny. It’s so much easier on your mind and your body, and trust me those are two very important things! Shoot, be your own #womancrushwednesday, if that’s your thing. Just love yoself.

I digress. Anyways.

Being back in the gym is so exciting. So many days I want to just jump right in where I used to be, but I know it takes baby steps. So, I have had to start off pretty small. But considering, I don’t think it’s too bad. Here’s a peek at what I’ve been doing each week, and am already seeing some progress.

For cardio:
Bike 10-14 miles (depending on mood lolz – sometimes a spin class, sometimes on my own)
Walk 1-2 miles

For legs:
Squats – 3 sets of 12 regular squats; 3 sets of 12 sumo squats; 3 sets of 12 pulsing squats
Lunges, 2 sets of 25
Side kicks, on all fours – 3 sets of 15 on each side

For abs:
75 bicycle crunches
30 seconds of the hundred
30 leg raises
50 regular crunches on Bosu ball (or regular exercise ball)
25 side crunches on Bosu ball (25 on each side)
Side planks – 3 sets of 20 seconds per side

As always, try to spend at least five minutes stretching!!

I will try to do more fitness posts, now that I’m back in the zone after far too long! Hope this snippet helps ya out, and I hope you feel fabulous doing it! I will post more workouts in the future!

Happy Friday, pretty people! I can’t believe it’s already the weekend again. I am back home in AR for a few days and the time is already flying! It seems like I can never have quite enough time to fit everything in while I’m here. There are so many people, both family and friends, who I am dying to see — yet at the same time I am dying to cuddle up on the couch with my dog and watch a movie with the parents. The struggle is so real!

I haven’t done a style post in a while, so I thought I’d show y’all my favorite basic shirt right now. I know when you hear basic tee you probably think of black or neutrals, but this tank is the perfect basic tank that adds a great pop of summer color. It is simple and comfy, like a basic tee, yet you can easily dress it up with heels and jewelry. Or you can throw on a hat with converses and it’s totally casual. Just do you. Lots of options with this one. Side note, I am obsessed with the material. It’s soft like a sweater, but thin like cotton. Yas gimme.

I dressed it up for this look, but I’m definitely putting it with converses next time I wear it! (which very well might be in like three days #obsessed).

OH and the bra/crop underneath it is the perfect coordinating pattern! I love adding pops of pattern like this. I forgot I even had this crop and happened to throw it in my bag! So glad I did. It was $5 at Forever21, by the way. Jeans are also Forever, but nacklace and tank are Riffraff and shoes are Target!

I hope you all have a rad weekend. I hope you feel beautiful today!

Hi and happy hump day! If you don’t know me personally, then I’m sure you’ve gathered by previous recipes that one of my favorite combinations is chocolate and peanut butter. If you didn’t know, now ya know. Obviously, that can be a dangerous obsession, so lately I have tried to find healthy, or at least lighter, ways to incorporate it.

So, I used my favorite meal – breakfast. Lately, I’ve seen all these fancy food bloggers posting all these amazing pictures of their oats, and I honestly couldn’t decide which one to turn to. Overwhelmed by the yumminess of them all, I decided to just wing it and create my own version. I didn’t use a recipe for this, I just kept trying different things until it worked how I wanted it. It keeps things interesting, right? ((complete recipe at bottom of post))

Just bring your milk to a boil, then add your oats. I use Quaker Old Fashioned oats. I usually turn the heat down about halfway, but not all the way to simmer. Stir occasionally; milk likes to stick to the sides/bottom of your pan if it sits hot too long so stirring is important.

After a minute or so, add a little brown sugar and cinnamon, and a stevia packet if you want. (I do!)

It takes about five minutes or so for the oats to get to the right consistency, but it all depends on how thick you like your oats. Use your own judgment there!

Once they are cooked how you want them, pour them into your bowl. Top with a tablespoon of *natural* peanut butter, a small handful of chocolate chips (it doesn’t take much), and any other toppings you want. I use chia seeds, sometimes chopped dates, and raisins would also be yummy! Let it sit for a hot minute, as everything gets all melty and wonderful. Then give it a solid stir, and all that melty, ooey gooey chocolate and peanut butter will mix up in there and your heart will explode. Enjoy! (You can also add more stevia if you want extra sweetness, but with the chocolate, you probably won’t need it!)

Oats:
1 cup milk of your choice
1/2 cup oats *your oats will have directions on them for cooking – the milk to oat ratio may be different for some! or if you are extra hungry, do 1.5 cup milk and 3/4 cup oats! just play with it*
2 teaspoons brown sugar
a couple shakes of cinnamon
Toppings:
1-2 teaspoons semi sweet chocolate chips
1 tablespoon natural creamy peanut butter
Optional: nuts, raisins, chia seeds, etc.

I have loved this breakfast, especially after spin class! It’s so filling, and so tasty. Hope you guys like it!

Beach Necessities

Hi friends! Hope your week was wonderful! Today I’m sharing my current beach necessities, because it’s definitely that time of year – yay! If you don’t live on the beach like I do, then hopefully this can apply to your layout sessions, or even your vacay!

So, awhile back before I moved here, my best friend Taylor got me the cutest monogrammed bag. I used it quite a bit, but ever since I moved to Florida and live 20 minutes from the ocean, I use it ALL. THE. TIME. And I love it! I never go to the beach without it. It fits all of my stuff, including my oversized towel, lotions/sunscreens, a hat, a book, and maybe even a cold beer or two ;). My friend’s mom sells this awesome brand called Initial Outfitters, which is where the bag is from. They don’t just have bags though! They have the CUTEST jewelry, scarves, etc. Seriously the best place to get gifts. If you’re interested let me know, I can get you more info!

Now, I also have to brag on Walmart… because that’s where this adorable beach towel is from. Yes Walmart and yes it’s cheap! My favorite part though — it’s the oversized version, so it’s huge!

My friends are just amazing, because the tanning lotion I’ve become obsessed with was also gifted to me by another bestie, Brittany! She sent it to me for my birthday and I absolutely love it. I put on my sunscreen (because who wants to burn?) and let it dry for about ten minutes, then apply the lotion! It really enhances your tan, AND it smells like chocolate! Boom.

And last but not least, a good pair of sunnies. These are from Francesca’s and I snagged them for less than ten dollars. I love aviators, and I felt these were the perfect size!

Hope you guys are heading to the beach soon, I’m 110% confident the ocean is good for the soul! Happy Friday!
